Once again, a special festival concert will be held in advance of the dates of the traditional period of the 69th-annual festival. On Monday, 24 March in Smetana Hall at the Municipal House, we will be welcoming an ensemble that is already well known to our festival audience, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra with its charismatic music director Michael Tilson Thomas, who has been the orchestra’s conductor since 1995. Having made its Prague Spring debut in 2003, this ensemble is now making its fourth visit, and it is rightly regarded as one of the worlds best symphony orchestras.
On their coming programme with the 2014 Prague Spring Artist in Residence, the violinist Julie Fischer, will play Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 1 in D Major, and the orchestra will also play Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. To begin the programme, the orchestra will start a Prague Spring concert for the first time with a work by a Czech composer as a special tribute of the orchestra and its conductor to the Year of Czech Music.
